6.0 Powerstroke

The next generation 6.0 Powerstroke is an engine designed to meet stringent emissions standards for diesel engines. The 6.0 powerstroke does this without reducing performance. The 6.0 powerstroke does this by using advanced electronics, a catalytic converter, and an electronic turbocharger. The maximum engine speed for the 6.0 powerstroke is 4100 rpm, with 325 horsepower and 3300 rpm.

Features of the 6.0 Powerstroke

The 6.0 powerstroke features a cast iron block with a split crankcase. The main part of the 6.0 powerstroke block contains the upper main bearings and cylinders. The lower part of the 6.0 powerstroke contains the lower main bearings. The engine oil cooler of the 6.0 powerstroke is integrated with the oil filter base and is not bolted to the side like many other engines.

Comparisons 6.0 Powerstroke to 7.3

Comparing the 6.0 powerstroke to other engines like the 7.3, you will notice the 6.0 powerstroke uses gear timing sets to drive the camshaft. The main difference here is the front of the engine houses only the lube oil and water pumps. The 6.0 powerstroke has four valves per cylinder with a bridge installed between two companion valves.

6.0 Powerstroke and Controlled Oil Pressure

The 6.0 powerstroke uses controlled high pressure engine oil to electronically operate the injectors. On the 7.3, the valve only allows oil into the top of the injector. The 6.0 powerstroke operates more like power locks on a door, only powering briefly to shuttle into an open position, thus reducing the noise of the injectors. The 6.0 powerstroke also uses a fuel injection module which gathers sensor data and calculates the injectors.

6.0 Powerstroke Preventing Oil Leaks

The oil system of the 6.0 powerstroke is a high pressure system that is completely internal. The design of the 6.0 powerstroke prevents oil leaks or any other leakage. The 6.0 powerstroke contains glow plugs to assist in starting in cold weather, and in emissions reduction. The glow plugs of the 6.0 powerstroke must pass through the water jacket.

6.0 Powerstroke Conclusions

One of the significant changes to the 6.0 powerstroke is the variable geometry turbocharger. This, along with the cooled exhaust gas recirculation valve lowers combustion temperatures which reduces emissions. Due to the turbocharger of the 6.0 powerstroke, shift performance has improved considerably. Each shift is positive and there are no lags between shifts on the 6.0 powerstroke. When considering increased performance and lower emissions for your diesel engine, one of the best choices is a 6.0 powerstroke.
