Cummins 6.7

The Dodge Cummins 6.7 engine was very successful and many drivers are loyal to this particular engine. The Cummins 6.7 engine is one that is used in the Dodge Ram and it provides drivers with excellent torque and power. Since the Cummins 6.7 engine is in a heavy duty truck it has to be able to haul, pull, and handle heavy duty work. The Cummins 6.7 always comes through.

Cummins 6.7 Background

The Cummins 6.7 engine has an interesting background. It actually replaced the Dodge Cummins 5.9L engine and the replacement was so that drivers would have more drivability with their heavy duty vehicles. Some of the changes include better throttle response, better trailer towing, and increased acceleration, among others. The changes in the Cummins 6.7 engine went over really well and customers were pleased.

Other Changes to the Cummins 6.7

Dodge wanted to ensure the Cummins 6.7 was truly an improvement to the 5.9L engine so they did extensive research and tests to ensure the reliability was maintained while offering additional features. Some of the additional features include improved braking and better fuel economy as well as improved combustion.

Cummins 6.7 Updates

Quite a few updates were made to the Cummins 6.7 engine. An integrated exhaust brake that was factory installed was one of the better additions to the heavy duty trucks and was complemented by the Cummins 6.7 engine. The brakes and engine together resulted in longer brake life and this lowered the overall cost of driving a Cummins 6.7 engine.

Specs of the Cummins 6.7

The Cummins 6.7 has some excellent specifications. Its horsepower of 350 is very powerful and it is accompanied by 650 pounds of torque. Although the Cummins 6.7 replaced the 5.9 the entire engine was not reworked. The reason why is because the 5.9L engine was reliable and strong. Dodge Cummins simply wanted to improve upon the already strong 5.9. So, they left approximately 40% of the same parts in the Cummins 6.7.

Cummins 6.7 Fuel System

The fuel system in the Cummins 6.7 engine is a High Pressure Rail fuel system. This particular fuel system is in its third generation and the changes made include a reduction in vibration, emissions, noise, and overall harshness. The Cummins 6.7 was also outfitted with a particulate filter that was able to filter out 90% more particulates than in the previous model year (2007).
