At the Powerstroke Turbo Diesel's premiere in 1994, the press and public response was nothing short of amazing. In the previous decade, International had only managed to produce and sell barely more than 80,000 engines per year. However, in 1994, International shipped almost 120,000 Powerstroke Turbo Diesel engines to Ford alone over and above its own truck production. The Powerstroke Turbo Diesel powertrain and engine management, which was now completely electronic, was also an innovative and revolutionary factor in the success of the Powerstroke Turbo Diesel. The Powerstroke Turbo Diesel PCM now controlled virtually every aspect of the powertrain, engine and transmission alike. It can be confidently stated that from the day of its debut the Powerstroke Turbo Diesel engine became a legend in American trucking.

The Popularity Of The Diesel Powerstroke Turbo

In 1995, the success of the Diesel Powerstroke Turbo continued as International was able to ship over 150,000 engines to be fitted in Ford pickup trucks. The last year of the conventional F series pickup truck body style was 1998; and in that year, International built more than 205,000 Diesel Powerstroke Turbo engines to be fitted into Ford trucks.

The collaboration between Ford and International Powerstroke Turbo Diesel engineers was able to increase power significantly in the 1999 model year through the installation of a thoroughly enormous intercooler-aired air system in the Powerstroke Diesel Turbo engine compartment. The Powerstroke Turbo Diesel power output now reached 235 brake horsepower and the magical 500 foot pound number was finally reached by Ford and International Powerstroke Diesel Turbo engines.

7.3 Powerstroke Diesel Turbo Was A Best-Seller

The sales of 1999 7.3 Powerstroke Diesel Turbo engines were literally clear off the charts and by the 2002 model year, the total horsepower of the Powerstroke Turbo Diesel had been increased all the way to 275 brake horsepower and the torque reached a previously unheard of 525 ft-lbs. The aftermarket was very active in selling to Ford Powerstroke Turbo Diesel pickup truck owners all sorts of accessories and parts to increase the horsepower and the torque even further. Some of these 7.3 Powerstroke Diesel Turbo engines readily produced over 300 brake horsepower and 600 ft-lbs of torque.

7.3 Powerstroke Turbo Diesel Was A Victim Of Smog Laws

For model year 1999, Ford was able to bring onto the market a completely innovative and thoroughly redesigned F series super duty pickup truck with a 7.3 Powerstroke Turbo Diesel engine. This Powerstroke Turbo Diesel truck was not only extremely handsome in its styling, but also had an extensive options list. The 2002 model year marked the high-water mark for the Powerstroke Turbo Diesel engine. Unfortunately, it was also the last year of the 7.3L diesel engine production. 6.0 Powerstroke Turbo Diesel: The Engine Ford Wants To Forget

Ford and International had to come up with a fully-redesigned engine and therefore they introduced the 6.0 Powerstroke Turbo Diesel version. Surprisingly, even though the new Powerstroke Turbo Diesel engine now had 1300 less cc's, the power was up to 325 brake horsepower and 570 foot pounds of torque. The engine's response was greater at every point in the power band. This increased response at almost any given rpm was primarily due to a completely new four valve cylinder head and a turbocharger which was designed on variable-geometry in the Powerstroke Turbo Diesel. The 18.0:1 compression ratio and with the EGR system, Ford and International engineers were able to craft a Powerstroke Turbo Diesel engine with significantly reduced emissions and superlative fuel economy. Unfortunately, the 6.0 Powerstroke Turbo Diesel engine turned out to be an unmitigated disaster for both Ford and International.
