2006 Powerstroke
The 2006 Powerstroke is one of the long line of Powerstroke Diesels put out by Ford over the last 20 years or so. It has the 6.0 Liter Diesel engine. There are many problems with this particular engine, but most of the recalls and problems happened with the 2003 and 2004 models. Ford finally switched to the 6.4 Liter engine with the 2008 models, but the 2006 Powerstroke still have the 6.0 Liter engine. Many people do not like this engine. The 6.0 Liter engine that powers the 2006 Powerstroke Ford truck was developed by Navistar for Ford trucks specifically to meet the new emissions legislation that the U.S. Congress passed in 2003. The development of this engine was rushed, and there were many complaints about its power and reliability.
2006 Powerstroke Diesel
One of the solutions that current owners of the 2006 Power stroke suggest is to maintain the truck regularly by changing the oil frequently, and also changing all other fluids, particularly transmission fluid. Some ASE certified technicians suggest a full fluid replacement every 30 thousand miles. Some owners of the 2006 Powerstroke also suggest making sure that you avoid sudden acceleration from a full stop with the 6.0 Liter engine that the 2006 Powerstroke comes equipped with. They believe that the turbocharger on the 2006 Powerstroke is simply not well-designed to allow full power with a sudden acceleration from a full stop.
2006 Powerstroke Computer
Another solution that some owners of the 2006 Powerstroke suggest is to add a number of different after-market equipment to the 2006 Powerstroke. Some suggest having the 2006 Powerstroke computer reprogrammed. They say this will allow you to get better mileage and power from the 2006 Powerstroke engine. Some Ford dealers also recommend having the 2006 Powerstroke computer reprogrammed. Some dealers also suggest that it is very important for the 6.0 Liter engine on the 2006 Powerstroke to get enough gas for the fuel-air mixture. The Diesel engine fuel will not combust in the ideal way for the 2006 Powerstroke 6.0 Liter engine unless there is enough fuel, and not too much air. Some people call this problem "running lean". The opposite problem, "running rich", is the situation where there is too much fuel, and not enough air for the right mixture.
2006 Powerstroke Ford Diesel Mileage
There are a number of different after-market add-on parts that owners of the 2006 Powerstroke can buy to increase the truck's performance both in terms of power and mileage. Some owners suggest the free-flowing AiRaid air filter. The 2006 Powerstroke air filters are very prone to clogging, due to the stringent emissions laws that the 6.0 Liter engine was designed to meet. Other owners suggest after-market exhausts like the Banks 4-inch stainless steel exhaust.

Having a larger exhaust system, particularly the exit pipe, is important for getting the most power out of any Diesel engine, including the 6.0 Liter engine on the 2006 Powerstroke. Some other owners suggest an after-market computer "tuner" like the Diablosport programmer, specifically the Predator series. This device is a handheld tuner that re-programs the computer on the 2006 Powerstroke engine. This device reprograms the allowing it to get more power and better mileage. According to the manufacturer, these improvements in power and mileage are noticeable over the entire RPM range.
2006 Powerstroke Ford Turbochargers
Some owners of the 2006 Powerstroke also recommend after-market turbochargers to the engine. turbochargers made by ATS Diesel are fairly popular among owners of the 2006 Powerstroke. A better turbocharger can cause noticeable, measurable increases in horsepower, torque, and overall towing ability. |
